A Strategic Overseas Reset
South Carolina Gamecocks coach Lamont Paris is taking his squad on a five‑day excursion to the Bahamas beginning August 7, a trip made possible by the NCAA’s recent relaxation of rules that had previously capped international tours at once every four years. The itinerary includes two exhibition matches — first against Victoria University of Canada, then against the Bahamian National Team — and is designed to give the 12 newcomers a chance to gel on and off the court.
The overseas dates also provide full practice sessions, allowing Paris to work with a roster that has been hampered by injuries to Marcus Johnson and Mathias Allesanco. In previous Bahamas tours, the Gamecocks leveraged the experience to capture league titles and secure NCAA Tournament berths, a track record that the coaching staff hopes to repeat.
Beyond the X’s and O’s, Paris stresses the importance of camaraderie, encouraging players to bond over beach outings, poolside hangs and other informal activities that foster trust. He believes that strong leadership emerging from these interactions will be crucial as the team navigates a season that has seen its recent tournament outings finish with just 25 combined wins over the past two years.
Despite the clear benefits, Paris has indicated that he will not pursue additional roster additions, even though scholarship limits still allow for new talent under the current eligibility framework. The focus, he says, is on developing the chemistry already present within the group.
