Roster Strategy in a Changing Landscape
South Carolina’s men’s basketball program currently fields 15 scholarship athletes, the maximum allowed under NCAA regulations, and Coach Lamont Paris has indicated that the roster will remain unchanged for the upcoming season.
A recent U.S. District Court decision grants high‑school graduates of the class of 2022 a fifth year of eligibility, extending their college careers into the 2026‑27 academic year, a provision that will remain in place until the NCAA’s pending appeal is resolved.
The potential appeal creates uncertainty for athletes such as Clemson’s Dillon Hunter and former USC guard Mike Sharavjamts, who could benefit from the extra year if they meet the criteria.
Despite the theoretical opening for an additional recruit, Paris has emphasized stability, noting that any roster adjustment would require a clear need and would not be pursued without it.
The Gamecocks have already utilized the transfer portal to bring in 12 newcomers, a move that reflects the coaching staff’s focus on depth rather than reshaping the lineup.
Freshman guard Marcus Johnson is currently recovering from a groin injury, while his cousin Meechie Johnson is preparing for a summer‑league stint with the Miami Heat and will join the team for fall training.
