Heightened Security Measures Ahead of Homecoming
South Carolina State University is preparing a comprehensive security plan for the upcoming homecoming and football season after a deadly shooting in October 2025 left one person dead and another injured. The incident, which occurred during the homecoming festivities, has prompted the administration to reassess safety protocols across campus.
To address the concerns, the university recently hosted a summit that brought together more than 20 local, state and federal agencies. Participants discussed a range of measures, from increasing the presence of sworn officers to deploying K‑9 units and establishing medical tents at high‑traffic venues. The collaborative effort underscores a regional commitment to preventing future tragedies.
Specific upgrades are slated for Hugine Suites, the residence hall where the shooting took place. Plans include new fencing, reinforced entry points and upgraded surveillance systems. In addition, the university will station additional security personnel at major event locations and expand its emergency response capabilities.
