Summer Reset for the Gamecocks
The University of South Carolina women's basketball team has reconvened on campus for the start of summer practices, marking the first step toward the upcoming season. The squad will be on the court for eight weeks once summer school begins, adhering to NCAA rules that cap weekly activity at eight hours of skills instruction, weight training and conditioning.
Coach Dawn Staley, who has guided the program to multiple Final Four appearances, announced that the roster will feature a blend of experience and fresh energy. Starters Tessa Johnson and Joyce Edwards are among the returning players, while reserves Maddy McDaniel, Adhel Tac, Agot Makeer, Ayla McDowell and Alicia Tournebize are also back in practice.
Two players who missed the 2025‑26 campaign because of injuries, Chloe Kitts and Ashlyn Watkins, have been cleared to rejoin the team. Their return adds depth to a backcourt that already includes a strong mix of veterans and emerging talent.
The Gamecocks have also bolstered the roster with Jordan Lee, a transfer from the portal, and five highly touted freshmen. The newcomers are expected to contribute immediately as the team fine‑tunes its schemes ahead of competition.
Looking Ahead to Paris
South Carolina will open its season on November 2 in Paris, facing Maryland in a highly anticipated matchup that will be streamed internationally. The early‑season test in France offers the team a unique environment to test chemistry and conditioning before returning home for the bulk of the schedule.
With a full summer of work ahead, Coach Staley expressed confidence that the blend of returning starters, recovered players and new additions will position the Gamecocks for a strong campaign. The program's preparation reflects a meticulous approach to both athletic development and compliance with NCAA regulations.
