A group of twelve high school football officials converged in Brookings, South Dakota, for a weekend-long development event that blended on-field drills with classroom sessions ahead of the new season.
Justin Ingalls, the state-wide coordinator of officials for the South Dakota High School Athletics Association, told participants that giving back to the game is as important as the game itself, underscoring the program’s mission to nurture the next generation of referees.
The clinic featured a mix of seasoned veterans and newer officials, offering participants live play experience that proved invaluable for honing their decision-making under pressure.
A veteran’s perspective on mentorship
Tate Schoenfelder, a ten-year referee, described the event as both beneficial and well-organized, noting that the practical scenarios and expert guidance created a supportive learning environment.
Ingalls took the opportunity to encourage athletes who are finishing their playing careers to consider stepping onto the officiating side of the sport, providing resources and encouragement for those interested in pursuing a refereeing pathway.
