South Dakota United Spirit celebrated a decisive 3-0 win over Desert Community of Southern California to capture the United States Club Soccer U-16 National Championship in Denver, Colorado. The victory capped a whirlwind tournament run that began with a perfect 5-0 record at the Midwest Regionals in Chicago.
The championship game was more than a scoreboard triumph; it was the culmination of years of travel, training and steady development under the guidance of coach Chris Pollreisz. Pollreisz first spotted Adia Hektner, a rising sophomore at Mitchell High School, before she entered seventh grade and has since been a mentor who set clear goals and pushed her to excel both on and off the field.
Hektner, the only representative from Mitchell on the roster, credits the club for teaching her composure under pressure and for shaping her growth as a player and a person. Her journey with South Dakota United began well before high school, when Pollreisz invited her to join the squad during the summer before seventh grade.
A Team Built on Diversity and Determination
The championship side blended talent from across South Dakota, with additional contributors from North Dakota and Montana, creating a unique camaraderie that extended beyond state lines. Their March tournament championship in Las Vegas served as an early indicator that the team could compete nationally.
Beyond the trophy, the experience offers Hektner a valuable foundation as she prepares for the upcoming high school soccer season, which opens with a match against Huron on August 14. She hopes the lessons learned on the national stage will translate into stronger performances for her high school team.
