The South Dakota United Spirit girls’ soccer team, composed of five standout players from Watertown and surrounding states, has earned a spot in the US Club Soccer National Cup scheduled for July 20‑24 in Denver, Colorado. Their journey to the national stage began with a flawless 5‑0 run through the Midwest Regionals, a victory that secured their place among the nation’s elite youth teams.
Coached by Chris Pollreisz and supported by Mike Snyder, the squad has spent the past several months honing their craft through a disciplined regimen of monthly practices and regional showcases. These events, held from October through June, have provided invaluable exposure to college recruiters and have helped the players develop chemistry ahead of the national competition.
At the National Cup, the Spirit will test themselves against teams hailing from Virginia, Georgia, Iowa, Washington, and California, as well as a strong contingent from the host state. Each match will be played at DICK’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, a suburb of Denver that serves as the tournament’s central venue. The schedule promises a rigorous series of games that will culminate on July 24.
A Milestone for a Growing Program
Beyond the immediate competition, the tournament represents a pivotal moment for the South Dakota United Spirit organization, which celebrates its 25th year as the longest‑running event of its kind in the United States. For the players, many of whom balance academics with elite athletics, the exposure to national scouts could open doors to collegiate scholarships and future opportunities. For the community, the team’s success underscores the growing strength of youth soccer in the Upper Midwest.
