A New Era for the Redhawks
Head coach John Klein enters his second season with a clear vision: to transform the Southeast Missouri women's soccer program into a Division I contender.
The 2026 squad features 18 newcomers who arrived through transfers and direct recruits, swelling the roster and injecting fresh talent. At the same time, ten players from the previous year return, forming the backbone of a team that finished 2‑15‑2 in its inaugural Division I campaign.
Past challenges were stark. Injuries decimated depth, and the jump to Division I proved more demanding than anticipated, leaving the coaching staff to adjust tactics on the fly. Coach Klein has spoken openly about the difficulty of motivating the group while implementing a new style of play.
Key Returners and Emerging Leaders
Among the returning veterans, senior defender Sophie Shrum stands out after missing much of last season due to injury, while sophomore forward Maya Domian brings local roots and vocal leadership from Cape Girardeau.
Sophomore midfielder Rachel Kretzer and junior defender Laia Amat earned spots on the OVC Players to Watch list, highlighting their versatility and attacking potential. Their contributions are expected to anchor both the midfield and back line.
Schedule and Season Goals
The Redhawks will test themselves against a demanding slate that includes matchups with Southern Illinois, Evansville, Missouri State, and several other regional powerhouses, before opening Ohio Valley Conference play on September 27.
The coaching staff emphasizes an intense, attacking style paired with disciplined defending, aiming to translate early-season momentum into a championship run. The ultimate objective is to capture the OVC title and elevate the program’s national profile.
