Southern Miss Adds Freshman Pitcher Luke Williams to Bolster Rotation

Transfer from East Central Community College brings arm and bat to the Golden Eagles

Southern Miss announced the addition of right‑handed pitcher Luke Williams through the transfer portal, marking the sixth newcomer to the program this offseason. Williams, a freshman out of East Central Community College in Decatur, Mississippi, arrives after a standout 2026 campaign that saw him post a 4‑1 record, a 3.49 ERA and 90 strikeouts across 56.2 innings.

A Dual‑Threat on the Mound and at the Plate

Beyond his pitching duties, Williams proved to be a versatile infielder, appearing in 40 games and hitting .313 with eight RBIs. His four‑pitch mix includes a fastball that topped out at 96 mph, a sharp slider, a breaking curveball and a deceptive changeup, giving him a deep arsenal that kept opposing batters off balance.

The highlight of his collegiate debut came on May 9 against Northwest Mississippi, where he tossed six shutout innings, allowing just three hits while striking out 10 batters. That performance underscored his ability to dominate games when he is on the mound.

Williams is not the only piece of movement for the Golden Eagles. The roster also welcomes transfers such as UAB second baseman Brady Waugh, Northwest Florida State catcher Brock Clayton, Grand Canyon first baseman Cannon Peery, Toledo outfielder Cade Baker and Pearl River Community College pitcher Drew Harrison. At the same time, six players have indicated intentions to leave, including McCarty English, who committed to Arizona, and Brooks Willoughby, headed to Louisiana Tech.

Strategic Moves Shape the Future

Coach Travis Creel sees the influx of talent as a strategic response to the program’s recent departures, aiming to maintain competitiveness in the Sun Belt Conference. By integrating fresh arms like Williams and adding experienced position players, Southern Miss hopes to preserve its momentum and contend strongly in the upcoming season.
