Southern Miss Baseball to Host Back‑to‑Back NCAA Regionals in Hattiesburg

Program’s recent Sun Belt triumph secures a second straight regional hosting opportunity, underscoring a decade of sustained excellence.

Southern Miss University’s baseball program will once again serve as the host site for an NCAA regional, continuing a run that began last season and now extends into its second straight year. The announcement comes after the Golden Eagles captured the Sun Belt Tournament championship, a victory that not only secured the conference title but also earned the program the right to stage the regional games from May 29 through June 1 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

A Milestone for the Program

The upcoming regional will mark the second time in as many years that Southern Miss has opened its doors to the national tournament, a feat previously achieved in 2009, 2022 and 2023. While the program has enjoyed notable successes, including a 2022 regional championship that featured wins over Army, Kennesaw State and LSU, it has also experienced setbacks such as an opening‑round loss to Columbia in the previous season’s regional.

Entering the regional, the Golden Eagles boast a 44‑15 record and have won at least 40 games for the tenth consecutive season. The team has demonstrated the ability to compete with top‑ranked opponents, highlighted by a 14‑4 victory over Alabama and wins against Ole Miss and Mississippi State earlier in the year. The squad’s 12th‑place RPI ranking reflects a 9‑7 record against Quad 1 opponents and a 17‑4 mark against Quad 2 competition.

Super‑regional play is scheduled for June 5‑8, after which the winners will advance to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska, beginning June 12. The Omaha event will feature the nation’s eight elite teams vying for the championship, continuing a tradition that Southern Miss has previously navigated, including a 2022 super‑regional appearance where the team fell to Ole Miss.

Coach Christian Ostrander, who has guided the program through a decade of sustained excellence, emphasized the importance of community support and the culture he has helped build. "This milestone reflects the hard work of our players, staff and fans," Ostrander said, underscoring the collective effort that has positioned Southern Miss as a recurring force in NCAA baseball.
