Southern Miss Bolsters Pitching Rotation with Transfer Luke Williams

The versatile right-hander joins a wave of offseason acquisitions as the Golden Eagles reshape their roster

Southern Miss has announced the addition of right‑hand pitcher Luke Williams, a recent transfer from East Central Community College in Decatur, Mississippi, as part of a busy offseason in the transfer portal.

Williams brings a blend of starting experience and relief work, having posted a 4‑1 record with a 3.49 ERA across 19 appearances last season while striking out 90 batters in 56.2 innings, a rate that translates to roughly 14.3 strikeouts per nine frames.

What sets him apart is a four‑pitch mix that includes a fastball that has topped out at 96 mph, a sharp slider, a curveball and a changeup, giving him the flexibility to navigate lineups in the tough Sun Belt Conference.

Beyond the mound, Williams also logged 40 games at shortstop and other infield positions, hitting .313 with eight RBIs, underscoring his versatility and depth for the Golden Eagles.

A Strategic Move for the Program

His standout performance came on May 9 against Northwest Mississippi, where he tossed six shutout innings, allowing just three hits and fanning 10 batters, a game that helped cement his reputation as a clutch arm.

The move comes as Southern Miss navigates a wave of roster turnover, with several current players — including Drake Meeks, Jace Norton, McCarty English, Brooks Willoughby, Jake Neely and Camden Rodgers — having entered the portal, while newcomers such as Brady Waugh, Brock Clayton, Cannon Peery, Cade Baker and Drew Harrison also join the mix.

Coach Travis Creel has emphasized that Williams’ blend of pitching prowess and positional flexibility aligns with the program’s goal of building a more adaptable, competitive squad heading into the next season.

The coaching staff believes that integrating a pitcher who can also contribute in the field will not only bolster the rotation but also provide depth in case of injuries, a factor that proved costly in recent seasons.
