The Southern University Board of Supervisors is set to vote on a proposal that would rename the baseball field at Lee‑Hines Stadium in honor of the late Coach Roger Cador, a figure whose name has become synonymous with excellence in HBCU baseball.
Over three decades, Cador compiled a 913‑597‑1 record, guiding the Jaguars to two national championships and fourteen conference titles while mentoring ten All‑Americans and shepherding 62 players into the professional draft.
Beyond the box score, he championed outreach to underserved communities, partnering with Major League Baseball to broaden access to the sport and founding the Urban Baseball Invitational, later christened the Andre Dawson Classic, which drew national attention to the talent emerging from historically black colleges and universities.
Cador’s own journey began as a student‑athlete at Southern University from 1970 to 1973, continued professionally in the Atlanta Braves organization, and culminated in inductions to four halls of fame — including the SWAC, Louisiana Sports, American Baseball Coaches Association, and National College Baseball halls — cementing his revered status.
A Legacy That Transcends the Diamond
Southern University leaders say that Cador’s influence will endure in Jaguar Nation, shaping the next generation of players and fans long after the field’s new signage goes up.
