A Global Pathway for Women’s Flag Football
The RCX Sports Foundation, in partnership with the National Football League, has revealed the 2026 Women’s Flag Football International Scholarship recipients, naming Spain’s Laura Hernández Sánchez and Canada’s Ella Sowden as the awardees.
Hernández Sánchez, a dynamic defensive back and wide receiver, will join the University of Texas at Arlington for her sophomore season after having captained her team as a freshman and representing Spain at the IFAF European Championship, where the side secured bronze.
Sowden, a standout from Football Saskatchewan’s U18 Provincial Team, has committed to Lindsey Wilson University, where she will continue both her academic pursuits and her flag football career, while also giving back as a mentor with the ‘Tykes on Spikes’ program.
The scholarship, which offers financial assistance and mentorship, is designed to support elite international athletes who demonstrate athletic excellence, leadership, character, community impact, and a dedication to growing the sport.
RCX Sports Foundation works closely with schools, state associations and governing bodies to build the infrastructure necessary for women’s flag football to thrive at scale, a vision that aligns with the NFL’s broader mission to diversify and expand the game.
Women’s flag football was recently admitted to the NCAA Emerging Sports for Women program, and the committee has recommended the creation of a National Collegiate Flag Football Championship, with all three divisions slated to vote on the proposal at the 2027 NCAA Convention.
Collegiate participation is accelerating, with more than 250 institutions now fielding varsity or club programs, and school participation having surged over 130 percent from the 2024‑2025 to the 2025‑2026 season.
Mentorship and Community Impact
Both scholarship recipients are already giving back, with Sowden coaching younger athletes and Hernández Sánchez engaging in community outreach, embodying the program’s emphasis on leadership beyond the field.
The initiative underscores a growing recognition that pathways for women in football can extend from high school to college and eventually to professional opportunities, reshaping the landscape for female athletes worldwide.
