A Promising Start
Alicia Flórez, a 22‑year‑old Spanish point guard, has made an immediate impact in her first two games for the Washington Mystics of the WNBA. In those outings she has averaged 7.0 points, 5.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds, numbers that have caught the eye of both the coaching staff and her teammates.
Coach Emre Vatansever and several of the Mystics’ veterans have highlighted Flórez’s intensity, toughness and ability to read defenses. Her quick adaptation to the league’s faster pace has been especially noteworthy, as she has already logged more minutes than some of the team’s established players.
Flórez’s journey to Washington began after she excelled in Spain’s top league, the Liga Femenina Endesa, where she posted 11.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.9 steals per game last season. Although she entered the 2024 draft as a highly regarded prospect, she went undrafted and was subsequently signed by the Mystics following a strong showing in practice.
Because she is classified as a developmental player, Flórez is limited to a maximum of 12 games before the club must decide whether to offer her a standard contract or let her go. This time constraint adds an extra layer of urgency to her performance evaluation.
The Mystics’ early decision to bring Flórez into the rotation reflects a broader strategy of integrating young international talent.
