A Season of Transition
Spanish Springs High School entered the 2025 campaign as the undisputed favorite after capturing its first 5A state championship with a flawless 13‑0 record. The Cougars averaged 44.2 points per game and posted a 31.5‑point margin of victory over Faith Lutheran, cementing their status as a powerhouse in northern Nevada.
Coach Rob Hummel, who has guided the program for seven seasons with a 50‑29 overall record, emphasized preparation and unselfish execution as the cornerstones of sustained success. His philosophy has produced a culture where hard work outweighs individual accolades.
Youthful Roster, Veteran Expectations
The graduation of 18 All‑Region honorees left only five seniors from the previous year’s squad, forcing the team to lean on a new wave of talent. Among the returning starters are quarterback Kanon Boggs, a 6‑foot junior who stepped up from the JV team, and defensive stalwart Brevon Miles, who will anchor the secondary.
Braden McDonald, widely regarded as the top tight end in Northern Nevada, will also line up at defensive end, while wide receiver George Deacon Buddy looks to capitalize on the vacated spots left by departed All‑Region players. The backfield will be bolstered by returning running backs Drayden Hare, Ryan Morris and Xavier Jaramillo, while the offensive line benefits from the experience of Elijah Gustavson and Kaelen Aguilar.
Defensively, the Cougars will field 11 new starters, with Ryan Morris emerging as one of the most seasoned contributors on the line. Dominic Robinson is expected to make an impact on both sides of the ball as a dual‑threat wide receiver and defensive back, adding depth to a unit that must adapt quickly.
Schedule and Outlook
The upcoming slate includes contests against Carson, Foothill in Henderson, Mountain View in Meridian, Idaho, as well as non‑regional matchups versus Simi Valley, California and Reno. Each game presents a test of the team’s resilience, but Coach Hummel remains confident that the blend of preparation, talent and discipline will allow the Cougars to repeat their championship pedigree.
