A New Era for Spartan Hockey
The Michigan State University hockey program is gearing up for a promising campaign as it welcomes a wave of new talent while saying goodbye to several cornerstone players.
The departure of the entire first line and star goaltender Trey Augustine leaves sizable shoes to fill, but the coaching staff remains confident that the incoming class will sustain the team's competitive edge.
Among the most anticipated additions is defenseman Chase Reid, who is projected to be selected second overall in the upcoming NHL Draft. Reid's junior season saw him tally more than a point per game from the blue line, showcasing both offensive flair and defensive reliability.
Another highly regarded prospect, Nikita Klepov, is expected to join the roster after a standout year with the Saginaw Spirit of the OHL. His contributions earned him the Emms Family Award and a nomination for the Red Tilson Trophy, underscoring his impact as a forward.
The incoming class also features forward Mason West, a first‑round draft pick who spent his junior years with the Fargo Force in the USHL, and Cullen Potter, a transfer from Arizona State who is projected to be a point‑per‑game player for the Spartans.
Between the pipes, Joshua Ravensbergen will assume the starting role vacated by Augustine. Ravensbergen brings a solid track record, having posted a .919 save percentage and a 2.51 goals‑against average during his junior season, highlighting his athleticism and consistency.
The blend of seasoned recruits and fresh talent has generated optimism among fans and analysts alike, with many predicting that Michigan State will remain a formidable force in collegiate hockey.
