Spartanburg Day School Revives Varsity Football After Four Decades

Coach Patrick Moffitt's program, bolstered by new talent, prepares for its inaugural season in the SCISA 2‑AA region

A long‑awaited return

After a four‑decade hiatus, Spartanburg Day School is set to field a varsity football team this August, marking a milestone for the campus community.

Coach Patrick Moffitt, who has spent the past two years shaping junior‑varsity and B‑team squads, will lead the new varsity lineup.

The team opens with a scrimmage against Blacksburg High on August 6, then travels to Asheville Christian Academy for its first official game on August 14. The first home contest arrives on August 28 against Thornwell Charter School.

Building the roster

Moffitt’s staff includes full‑time assistants Andrew Vaught and Chris Cormier, while the roster welcomes fresh talent such as Finlay MacMillan and Sagan O’Brien. Long‑standing leaders — Charles Wilson, Camden Teel, Nick Querin, Tyler Fernanders and Heath Boyd — have been instrumental since the program’s restart in 2024.

The school community is buzzing with excitement as the team prepares to compete in the SCISA 2‑AA region, a move that promises to rekindle school spirit and provide a new platform for local athletes.
