Springfield Central High School has decided to adopt a junior varsity‑only football schedule for the 2026‑2027 academic year, a move driven by a shortage of players capable of fielding a full varsity roster.
The decision was conveyed to families in an email on Monday, outlining the rationale and the steps the administration plans to take to ensure a smooth transition.
A Coach With a Plan
John Ely, who has been coaching since 2018 at Lawrence High School, will lead the football program at Central High. His arrival brings a fresh perspective and a focus on player development, safety and long‑term success.
At the same time, the school is investing $10 million in renovations to Harrison Stadium. The upgrades aim to modernize practice facilities, improve playing conditions and reinforce a safer environment for all athletes.
Community spirit will remain front and center, as Homecoming 2026 will be celebrated during the October soccer game, featuring student athletes, the marching band, Kilties and cheerleaders.
