The St. Cloud Tech girls flag football team enters the state tournament with a perfect 9-0 record, a milestone that has the entire program buzzing with excitement. Their journey to this point was forged in the aftermath of a painful playoff loss to Elk River last year, a defeat that became the catalyst for an offseason of relentless improvement.
Head coach Jon Benson, who has guided the Tigers since the program's inception, repeatedly reminded his squad of that loss during training sessions. "We turned that disappointment into fuel," Benson said, emphasizing the team's unselfish spirit and the camaraderie that has defined their campaign.
At the heart of the Tigers' offense is senior standout Reese Ruska, whose versatility shines across rushing, receiving, and defense. Ruska leads the team in multiple categories, boasting 19 carries for 313 yards and five touchdowns, 55 catches for 875 yards and 15 touchdowns, and 18 interceptions on defense.
Quarterback Sydney Shamla has been equally pivotal, completing 122 of 223 passes for 1,727 yards, 34 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. His precision has opened up opportunities for receivers Greta Anderson and Madi Hengel, who have combined for over 600 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns.
Defensively, Anderson anchors the secondary with 34 tackles, four tackles for loss, and three interceptions, while Hengel contributes 32 tackles and four interceptions. Defensive coordinator Katie Boardman has praised the group's intensity, noting that the players "fire up each other" on every snap.
The First Challenge
The Tigers' inaugural test will come against No. 9 Park of Cottage Grove on Monday, June 8, at noon, at the Minnesota Vikings' TCO Stadium in Eagan. This matchup marks the first time the two programs have faced off, making the unknown opponent a unique hurdle. Benson acknowledges the uncertainty but stresses that the team is ready to meet it head‑on.
The Vikings have sponsored the state‑wide flag football league for the past two springs, providing the venue and a platform that has elevated the tournament's profile.
