A Historic Victory in Five Innings
The St. Joseph-Ogden Spartans etched a milestone into Illinois high school baseball history on Saturday, capturing their first IHSA state championship with a 15‑1 victory over Harvest‑Westminster that was called after five innings under the mercy rule. The team exploded for six runs in the opening frame, highlighted by a pair of RBI doubles, and never looked back.
The Spartans finished the season with a staggering 40‑2 record, having narrowly missed the title in 2016 and 2017 as runners‑up. Those near‑misses only amplified the excitement and expectations surrounding this year's final.
Head Coach Josh Haley, who has guided the program for several seasons, praised the unwavering support of the local community, noting that the crowd's energy was a decisive factor in the squad's early surge and overall momentum.
First baseman Bryson Houchens was instrumental, launching a two‑run homer in his second at‑bat and adding a 2‑run double earlier, helping the Spartans build a 13‑0 lead by the third inning.
Celebrations On and Off the Field
After the final out, players gathered with classmates to sing the school fight song, a moment that underscored the deep ties between the team and its student body and capped a season that will be remembered for years to come.
