St. Lawrence University is pinning its hopes for a turnaround on the incoming freshman class that will form the core of the 2026 hockey squad. The program has struggled to stay above .500 since 2017, and the administration believes fresh talent can shift the momentum.
Coach Brent Brekke has voiced confidence that the newcomers can make an immediate impact, noting that their diverse skill sets complement the existing roster and address the gaps that have kept the Saints from breaking out of their recent slump.
Fresh Faces on the Roster
Will Bishop arrives as a 6‑foot‑6 defenseman who captured a Memorial Cup with the Kingston Frontenacs, bringing size and poise to the blue line. Max Dirracolo, a rugged defender from the Kitchener Rangers, adds physicality and a championship pedigree. Ihnat Pazii, who represented Ukraine at the D1A Championships, offers versatility and international flair as a forward. Luke Posthumus, the 2023 Central Canada Hockey League Rookie of the Year, brings a knack for finding the net, while Owen Tylec, a cerebral playmaker who logged 45 points in 62 games with the Des Moines Buccaneers, is expected to elevate the team’s hockey IQ.
The coaching staff believes the blend of size, toughness, versatility, scoring touch and high‑level hockey sense will not only boost on‑ice performance but also foster a competitive culture that can reverse the program’s downward trend.
Beyond the individual stories, the freshmen represent a strategic infusion of talent from storied junior programs across North America. Their arrival coincides with a broader push by the university to revitalize its athletic identity and restore fan confidence in a team that has endured a decade of mediocrity.
