The St. Paul Hockey Boosters, a volunteer group that champions public high school hockey in Minnesota’s capital, has been awarded a Period 3 Grant that will finance a purpose‑built locker and storage area at Charles M. Schulz Arena.
A permanent home for junior varsity teams
Instead of sharing cramped locker rooms and shuttling gear back and forth each day, the new facility will give junior varsity squads a secure place to change and store equipment throughout the season.
Safety concerns have been especially acute for younger players who lack driving privileges, limiting their ability to reach the arena without reliable transportation.
By eliminating daily equipment transport, the dedicated space also removes a barrier for families that struggle to coordinate rides, opening the program to a broader slice of the student body.
Beyond lockers: maintaining a sustainable arena
The grant’s benefits extend past the locker room; a portion of the funds will be earmarked for ongoing maintenance and operational sustainability of Charles M. Schulz Arena, ensuring the venue remains a viable hub for the sport.
Organizers say the initiative aligns with the broader goal of making the district’s hockey program more inclusive, accessible and resilient for all SPPS students.
