Summer Revitalization at Cove Island Park
Cove Island Park, a 42‑acre green space in Stamford, Connecticut, has long served as a hub for recreation, offering walking trails, picnic areas, beaches and a rich habitat for birdlife.
The city’s Zoning Board recently gave the green light to a comprehensive upgrade that will modernize the park’s sports infrastructure and improve accessibility.
Principal Planner Vineeta Mathur explained that the project aims to enhance the existing tennis and basketball facilities while introducing new pickleball courts to meet growing community demand.
Details of the Renovation
Three new tennis courts and two dedicated pickleball courts will be constructed, while the current basketball court will be completely re‑paved.
The upgrades also include new fencing, additional seating, and a series of ADA‑compliant pathways that will connect the parking area directly to the sports fields.
Zoning Board Chairman David Stein praised the collaborative effort that made the improvements possible, noting that the enhancements will provide a more inclusive environment for all users.
Louis Casolo, a longtime park advocate, welcomed the changes, emphasizing that the upgraded facilities will encourage greater participation across age groups.
City officials anticipate that the work will be finished by the end of summer, just in time for the peak recreational season.
Beyond the athletic upgrades, the park’s natural assets — its walking trail, picnic zones and beaches — will remain central to its identity, supporting a diverse array of wildlife.
