Stanford University’s field hockey team edged out American University 3-1 in a tightly contested match on the West Coast, delivering a satisfying finish for the Cardinal side.
Dominant First Half
From the opening push‑back, the Cardinal offense surged ahead, registering six shots on goal in the first half while the Eagles were unable to muster any attempts, setting the tone for a dominant opening period.
American’s lone response came from Kaleigh Missimer, who converted a penalty stroke in the third quarter to bring the score to 2‑1, marking one of only two penalty‑stroke goals she has recorded this season despite playing limited minutes because of injury.
Stanford’s second goal arrived just 30 seconds into the second period, a swift strike that doubled the lead, and Bea Varley capped the scoring with a scramble finish in front of the cage, sealing a 3‑1 advantage.
Head Coach Jennings acknowledged the Cardinal’s early superiority and the Eagles’ difficulty in capitalising on chances, noting that the team will look to sharpen its attack in upcoming home games against Richmond and Appalachian State.
