A Fundraiser with a Purpose
On August 14, Pierre, South Dakota, will host a charity gathering that brings together National Hockey League alumni and a home‑grown talent to raise funds for the Ice Barn’s expansion. The evening, priced at $50 per attendee or $350 for a table of eight, asks guests to dress in business‑casual attire while supporting a project that has already secured more than $3.1 million.
The Oahe Hockey Association’s Capitalize on the Future campaign has earmarked the money for a comprehensive renovation that will convert the Ice Barn, purchased in 2016, into South Dakota’s only year‑round ice facility. Planned upgrades include larger locker rooms, expanded seating, and dedicated operational spaces, all designed to make the venue ready for regular tournament play.
Beyond the physical upgrades, the project promises to strengthen Pierre and neighboring Fort Pierre’s ability to host regional and national hockey events. The Ice Barn’s transformation is expected to draw teams from across the Midwest, generating economic activity and providing a permanent stage for the sport’s growing popularity in the region.
Brian Rafalski, a three‑time Stanley Cup champion and U.S. Hockey Hall of Famer, will share stories from his distinguished career and reflect on the hospitality he experienced during the COVID‑19 pandemic. His participation underscores a personal commitment to giving back to communities that have supported his journey, and he expressed enthusiasm about helping Pierre’s new rink become a reality.
Carter Sanderson, the first South Dakota player ever selected in the NHL Draft, will also be present. Drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2025, Sanderson’s achievement marks a historic milestone for the state’s hockey development. He will discuss his path from local rinks to the professional ranks and the importance of facilities like the Ice Barn in nurturing future talent.
The Oahe Hockey Association, which serves over 2,000 youth annually and organizes more than 130 games and tournaments each year, will benefit directly from the renovated venue. The upgraded Ice Barn is slated to become a central hub for community events, offering a reliable space for both competition and grassroots hockey initiatives.
Tickets for the August 14 fundraiser are available at $50 per person or $350 for a table of eight, with proceeds earmarked for the final phases of the Ice Barn’s renovation. The event promises to blend celebrity presence with local pride, illustrating how collective effort can turn a shared vision into a lasting community asset.
