Staples Girls Basketball hosted its inaugural Summer Slam Jam last weekend, a fundraiser inspired by the boys’ basketball team’s successful initiative. The event gathered players, parents and local supporters for a day of competition and camaraderie.
All proceeds were earmarked for program essentials that extend beyond the school’s standard flat‑rate funding, including new uniforms, basketballs, training equipment and pre‑game meals for the team.
Beyond the financial benefit, the jam provided a unique opportunity for younger participants to meet and interact with the varsity squad, fostering mentorship and a stronger sense of belonging within the basketball community.
A Day of Fun and Future Growth
Head Coach Sparks praised the effort, describing the jam as a way to “create excitement and a shared purpose across all levels of our program.” Varsity captain Chloe Smith, along with assistant coaches Tara Bennett and Jim O'Donoghue, coordinated the logistics and volunteer staffing.
The organizers hope the model will inspire other schools to adopt similar community‑focused fundraisers, while also giving parents a chance to watch their children compete in a supportive environment.
Participants described the atmosphere as festive and energetic, with drills, mini‑games and a showcase of talent that left many looking forward to the upcoming season. The success of the Summer Slam Jam underscores the power of collaborative fundraising to enrich athletic programs and strengthen community ties.
