A season of renewal
Under the guidance of second‑year coach Matty Jacowleff, the Staples High School football team finished the previous season with a 5‑6 record but showed flashes of promise that have set an optimistic tone for the upcoming year.
The Wreckers return five offensive and five defensive starters, giving the squad a core of experienced players who already understand the playbook. Among them are athletic offensive linemen and standout receivers such as Hunter Pallai and Levi Belzer, whose speed and size should help open up the passing game.
A tough 2025 schedule awaits, with the team slated to face seven playoff opponents. After dropping two straight Class LL playoff games — including a 14‑0 loss to Greenwich in their first playoff appearance — the coaching staff has emphasized defensive adjustments and continuity to avoid a repeat of that early exit.
Key defensive pieces are emerging, notably Parker Toohey, who has quickly established himself as one of the state’s top edge rushers. Meanwhile, the quarterback position remains open, with Grant Bozeman and Brandon Gutman competing for the starting role, while senior running back Dan Devine is expected to anchor the ground attack with his quickness and toughness.
To manage the physical demands of a demanding schedule, the team plans to employ a two‑platoon system, allowing starters to focus on one side of the ball and sustain performance throughout the season. The ultimate goal is to translate this blend of athleticism, experience, and strategic adjustments into a deeper playoff run and, ideally, a matchup against longtime Thanksgiving rival Greenwich in the quarterfinals.
