When Major League Baseball’s Statcast system first went live, it promised a window into the physics of every play. Today that window is wider than ever, capturing everything from the speed of a bat at the sweet spot to the exact angle at which a ball leaves a hitter’s barrel.
The Numbers Behind the Game
One of the most talked‑about thresholds is the definition of a hard‑hit ball: any contact that leaves the bat at 95 mph or higher. That figure has become a benchmark for power, and it is often paired with measurements of bat speed, which the system records at the point of impact.
Launch angle, too, has taken on a precise meaning. Events that rise between eight and 32 degrees are considered optimal, a range that maximizes the chance of extra‑base hits while minimizing ground‑ball outcomes. When a ball is struck within a 5‑20 degree Attack Angle, analysts label it an Ideal Attack Angle, a term that has entered everyday commentary.
Predictive statistics such as xBA and xwOBA build on those fundamentals. xBA estimates the probability that a given batted ball will become a hit, while xwOBA refines that estimate by incorporating exit velocity, launch angle and the runner’s sprint speed. The resulting figure is then translated onto the ERA scale as xERA, giving a familiar context to a otherwise abstract number.
Beyond hitting, Statcast tracks the quality of contact through metrics like EV50, which averages the hardest half of a batter’s balls in play, and Adjusted EV, which caps each exit velocity at 88 mph before averaging. These tools help teams separate truly powerful swings from those that merely look impressive.
Fielding metrics add another layer of insight. The Jump statistic highlights outfielders with the quickest reactions and most direct routes, while a Bolt — any run in which a player’s sprint speed reaches at least 30 ft/sec — captures the raw speed that can turn a single into a triple.
