When Major League Baseball introduced Statcast in 2015, it transformed the way analysts, coaches and fans think about the sport. The system captures every swing, pitch and fielding move with high‑speed cameras and radar, turning raw numbers into a language that can describe the nuances of play.
The Building Blocks of Statcast
One of the first concepts that emerged was the definition of a hard‑hit ball. Statcast marks a batted ball as hard‑hit when its exit velocity reaches 95 miles per hour or higher, indicating a potentially damaging contact.
Another key parameter is launch angle. A launch angle that falls between eight and 32 degrees is generally considered optimal, as it balances the chance of a line drive with the likelihood of a fly ball that can clear the fence.
Expected batting average, or xBA, quantifies the probability that a given batted ball will become a hit based on its exit velocity, launch angle and sprint speed. Complementing xBA, expected weighted on‑base average, or xwOBA, incorporates those same inputs while also factoring in the quality of the contact.
To smooth out the extremes of raw exit velocity, analysts often calculate EV50, which averages the hardest half of a batter’s batted balls or the softest half of a pitcher’s allowed batted balls. Adjusted EV takes this a step further by capping each event at 88 miles per hour or using the actual measured speed, whichever is higher.
Bat speed, measured at the sweet spot of the bat, is another core metric. A swing is classified as fast when bat speed registers at least 75 miles per hour, a threshold that correlates with higher exit velocities and more hard‑hit outcomes.
When a ball is struck with an attack angle ranging from five to 20 degrees, it is labeled as an Ideal Attack Angle. This window aligns closely with the sweet spot of the swing and is associated with the most efficient contact. Statcast translates xwOBA into an xERA figure, a simple 1:1 conversion that places the metric on the familiar ERA scale for pitchers.
Outfield Reaction and Sprint Speed
Statcast also tracks a metric called Jump, which highlights players with the quickest reactions and most direct routes in the outfield. Meanwhile, a Bolt is recorded whenever a runner’s sprint speed reaches or exceeds 30 feet per second, marking a burst of elite speed on the basepaths.
Together, these statistics provide a comprehensive picture of performance that goes far beyond traditional counting stats. By linking exit velocity, launch angle, bat speed and reaction time, teams can pinpoint strengths, identify areas for improvement and craft strategies that exploit opponents’ weaknesses.
