Statcast has become the backbone of baseball's analytical revolution, turning raw video and radar data into a library of precise measurements. By tracking every ball that leaves the bat and every movement of the players, the system provides a granular view that goes far beyond traditional stats.
Central to this view is the definition of a hard‑hit ball: an exit velocity of 95 mph or more combined with a launch angle between 8 and 32 degrees. This criterion helps isolate the most damaging contacts, setting the stage for deeper metrics like xBA and xwOBA, which estimate a batted ball’s likelihood of becoming a hit or an out based on exit velocity, launch angle, and sprint speed.
For batters, the EV50 metric captures the average exit velocity of their hardest half of contacts, while pitchers see a complementary figure that averages the softest half of balls they allow. Adjusted EV further refines this by capping maximum potential exit velocity at 88 mph, ensuring a consistent benchmark across varying pitch speeds.
Bat speed, measured at the sweet spot, is derived from the top 90 % of swings, with a fast swing defined as 75 mph or higher. The system also records the total path length of the bat head in three‑dimensional space and the vertical angle at impact, feeding into concepts like Ideal Attack Angle, which ranges from 5 to 20 degrees.
Pitching metrics extend to spin characteristics, with spin rate expressed in revolutions per minute and movement quantified in inches. This data feeds into xERA, a translation of xwOBA onto the ERA scale, allowing evaluators to gauge a pitcher’s true effectiveness. Release distance from the mound is also tracked, adding another layer to pitch profiling.
Defensive analytics are equally detailed. Fielding metrics assess outs saved relative to peers, while catchers’ reaction times to stolen‑base attempts are measured in seconds. Outfielders’ catch likelihood is expressed as a percentage, and their ability to prevent wild pitches is compared against league averages. The jump metric highlights the quickest reactions and most direct routes taken by outfielders.
Running speed remains a cornerstone of player evaluation, with top sprint speed recorded in feet per second during a player’s fastest one‑second window. A “Bolt” is defined as any run exceeding 30 ft/sec, underscoring the elite pace that can change the dynamics of a game.
