Expected batting average, or xBA, translates a batted ball’s characteristics into a probability of a hit, while xwOBA refines that estimate by incorporating exit velocity, launch angle and the runner’s sprint speed. Bat speed, recorded at the sweet spot of the barrel, is another critical indicator. Pitchers’ contributions are measured through spin dynamics. The movement of a pitch, expressed in inches relative to league averages, is driven by what Statcast terms Active Spin—the portion of rotation that directly influences trajectory. By converting xwOBA into an ERA‑scale figure, analysts arrive at xERA, a metric that approximates a pitcher’s earned‑run average based on underlying performance rather than results alone.
