State Baseball Championships Conclude in Mitchell
The amateur baseball season in the state wrapped up this weekend as Class A and Class B teams converged in Mitchell, with every contest staged at the twin venues of Cadwell Park and Drake Field.
In the Class B bracket, Friday’s action featured a pair of close contests — Clark Traders edged Dell Rapids Mudcats 8-7, while Hartford/Humboldt Wood Ducks rolled past Canova Gang 11-6. Saturday’s slate continued the momentum, with Clark Traders downing Dell Rapids PBR 7-5 before the Alexandria Angels erupted for a 14-5 victory that set up a decisive Sunday showdown.
The Angels closed out the tournament with a 12-2 triumph, clinching the Class B State Championship and capping a weekend that saw multiple lead changes and late-inning heroics.
Class A competition followed a knockout format, beginning with Friday’s elimination games where Tea Steam slipped past Brookings Cubs 8-7, Renner Monarchs dispatched Harrisburg Woodies 6-2, and Brookings Cubs edged Sioux Falls Brewers 2-1. Saturday’s rematch saw Tea Steam rally for a 14-13 win over Brookings, only to fall 8-2 to Harrisburg on Sunday. In the championship final, Renner Monarchs secured the title with a 3-1 victory over Harrisburg, rounding out a tournament marked by resilience and tight scores.
