Bellevue University announced on Monday that Stephanie McDonagh will assume the role of head coach for the women's basketball program, effective May 18. The university highlighted her extensive experience as both a player and a coach, noting her deep roots in the sport and her recent success at the University of Providence.
McDonagh’s playing career at Providence set program records for steals and contributed to multiple conference championships. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, she returned to the university as an assistant coach before rising to associate head coach in July 2024.
Athletic director Ed Lehotak praised McDonagh for her ability to connect with student‑athletes and evaluate talent, stating that her leadership aligns with the university’s ambition to build a culture of hard work and competitiveness.
McDonagh expressed excitement about leading the women’s basketball program at Bellevue University, emphasizing her desire to continue the tradition of excellence while fostering growth among the student‑athletes.
A New Era for Bruins Basketball
The hiring marks a pivotal moment for the Bruins, who finished the 2025‑26 season with a 10‑17 overall record and a 6‑16 mark in Frontier Conference play. McDonagh arrives with a coaching résumé that includes three Frontier Conference championship teams and seven NAIA National Tournament appearances.
During the 2024‑25 season, Providence posted a 22‑8 record and captured the Frontier Conference Tournament title, producing two first‑team all‑conference selections and two WBCA All‑Americans. McDonagh served as the lead defensive coordinator and lead recruiting coordinator during that campaign.
James Benford, who served as Bellevue’s interim head coach, will remain on staff as an assistant coach, ensuring continuity as the new leadership takes shape.
Strategic Vision and Expectations
McDonagh’s vision centers on elevating the program’s competitive edge while maintaining academic integrity. She plans to implement a defensive scheme that leverages her reputation as a top defensive coordinator, aiming to increase turnover margins and transition scoring opportunities.
Recruiting will be a cornerstone of her strategy. By tapping into her extensive network across the Pacific Northwest and beyond, she hopes to attract talent that can thrive in a high‑intensity, player‑focused environment.
Looking Ahead
The Bruins’ upcoming schedule features a blend of non‑conference matchups and Frontier Conference battles, providing a rigorous test for the newly assembled coaching staff. McDonagh is confident that the blend of experienced returnees and fresh recruits will position the team for a strong postseason push.
As the university community embraces this transition, the excitement surrounding McDonagh’s leadership reflects a broader commitment to revitalizing the women's basketball program and fostering a winning culture that resonates both on and off the court.
