Villanova University announced Tuesday that Stephen Curry, class of 1999 and former Bison linebacker, has pledged a $1 million gift to endow the school’s inaugural defensive coordinator role. The contribution, named the Steve Curry ‘99 Defensive Coordinator Endowed Fund, will provide flexible financing for the program’s long‑term ambitions, from recruiting top talent to retaining elite coaching staff.
A Legacy in the Making
Curry’s connection to Villanova dates back to his collegiate years, when he starred at linebacker from 1996 to 1998, amassing 114 tackles, including 80 solo stops and seven tackles for loss. In 1997 the team posted an unbeaten 11‑0 record, reached the NCAA quarterfinals and climbed to the No. 1 spot in the national rankings.
The program’s recent surge adds a timely backdrop to the gift. The 2025 season concluded with a 12‑3 finish, a hard‑fought CAA title chase and a run to the FCS semifinals, marking the fourth time the Wildcats have advanced that far. A top‑five national ranking in both major polls and a 7‑1 home record at Villanova Stadium underscore the program’s momentum.
Eric Roedl, Vice President and Director of Athletics, expressed gratitude for Curry’s generosity, noting that the endowment will enhance student‑athlete opportunities and reinforce the university’s pursuit of excellence. Head coach Mark Ferrante echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that the funding will be instrumental in attracting and retaining top defensive talent.
Curry, who now coaches at Dexter Southfield School in Brookline, Massachusetts, continues to mentor current Wildcats and remains an active alum. The new defensive coordinator position is slated to begin its inaugural season as the team opens its first Patriot League schedule on August 28 against William & Mary.
