A federal judge in Missouri has granted defensive tackle Sterling Webb a temporary restraining order that clears the way for him to practice and compete for the Tigers in the 2026 season, effectively pausing the NCAA’s eligibility decision pending a broader lawsuit.
The ruling comes as the NCAA prepares to roll out its new age‑based eligibility model, which will allow athletes five years to complete five full seasons of competition starting in the fall of 2027. Because the policy was not applied retroactively, athletes who exhausted their eligibility in four years, like Webb, were initially denied an additional season.
Webb’s Case and the Wider Fight
Webb, who began his college career at New Mexico State before transferring to Missouri, has logged 25 games with 11 starts, compiling 38 tackles and two sacks. He is the sole returning starter on a top‑20‑ranked Missouri defense and is expected to battle for a starting spot alongside Marquis Gracial or Jalen Marshall when the season opens against Arkansas‑Pine Bluff on September 3.
Webb’s attorneys have cited successful challenges in Ohio and Texas as precedent, arguing that the NCAA’s refusal to apply the new rules retroactively violates both contractual expectations and the spirit of the updated eligibility framework. Two other former Mizzou athletes are also entangled in similar litigation, underscoring a growing legal front against the governing body.
The decision not only grants Webb a temporary reprieve but also sets a procedural precedent that could influence how the NCAA handles eligibility disputes moving forward.
