A crowd gathered on a bright Saturday morning at the Crimson Complex as Steubenville officials unveiled a plaque that christens the baseball field in honor of Fred Heatherington, a coach whose name has become synonymous with the city’s baseball tradition.
The ceremony brought together the current Red squad, alumni who once wore the same uniform, and a roster of community leaders who had watched Heatherington shape the program over more than forty years.
Speaking from the pitcher's mound, Heatherington expressed deep gratitude to the players who had taken the field under his guidance, to the school administration that supported his vision, and to the parents whose encouragement sustained him through countless seasons.
He reflected on a career marked by 697 victories and several championships, noting that his primary objectives had always been to teach the fundamentals of the game, help athletes secure college opportunities, and raise the profile of Big Red baseball across the state.
A lasting legacy
Among those on hand were former star pitcher Justin Banks, longtime administrator Dr. Keenan, and longtime supporter Rich Ranallo, each of whom shared brief remarks that underscored the coach’s lasting influence on and off the diamond.
Messages from Melinda Young, Greg Agresta, Ruth Ann Bruzzese, Matt Davis, William Hendricks, Tom Timmons, Reno Saccoccia and Chuck Watt highlighted different facets of Heatherington’s impact on the community, reinforcing the deep respect he commands.
As the plaque was revealed, the crowd erupted in applause, a fitting tribute to a man whose dedication has left an indelible imprint on Steubenville’s sporting heritage.
