Steve Cherundolo, a three‑time World Cup defender and MLS Cup‑winning coach, has been named head coach of the United States under‑23 men’s soccer team as they gear up for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
A Strategic Choice for Olympic Soccer
Because the United States will host the Games, the under‑23 side automatically secures a spot in the 12‑team tournament, removing the need for a traditional qualification campaign.
Cherundolo brings a résumé that blends top‑level playing experience with proven coaching acumen. He was a member of the U.S. squads at the 2002, 2006 and 2010 World Cups, later guiding Los Angeles FC to the Supporters’ Shield and the 2022 MLS championship.
His coaching journey has taken him from Germany to the United States, where he most recently steered the New England Revolution before returning to the national stage. He will split his time between the United States and Europe, working out of the national training center near Atlanta while also running camps abroad.
In his new role, Cherundolo will collaborate closely with both youth development staff and senior national team coaches, aiming to blend emerging talent with a mindset geared toward an Olympic medal. He also hopes to deepen fan involvement as the squad prepares for the global showcase.
The appointment signals a strategic push by U.S. Soccer to leverage Cherundolo’s dual expertise in player development and high‑pressure competition, positioning the under‑23 program for a strong showing on home soil.
