Steve Cherundolo, a former U.S. international who spent 15 seasons in the Bundesliga with Hannover 96, has been appointed head coach of the United States Under-23 Men’s National Team as the nation prepares for the 2028 Olympic Games.
Cherundolo’s playing résumé includes 87 caps for the senior national side and 415 appearances for Hannover 96, where he established himself as a reliable left back before turning to coaching.
After a stint in Germany’s coaching ranks, he returned to the United States to take charge of Los Angeles FC, guiding the club to an MLS Cup title and a Supporters’ Shield in his debut season, and later adding a second MLS Cup final appearance.

In his new role, Cherundolo will assemble a roster capable of competing on the Olympic stage, emphasizing technical development, tactical awareness and the integration of emerging talent from across the country.
