Steve Nickson, the former head of recruitment at Newcastle United, has swapped the Premier League’s north‑east for the Welsh coast, taking up the newly created role of sporting director at Wrexham.
Nickson arrives with a decade and a half of scouting and player development experience, having spent ten years at Blackburn Rovers before his most recent stint at Newcastle, where he helped bring in talents such as Joelinton, Ayoze Pérez and the Dutch centre‑back Sven Botman.
A strategic hire for a club with Premier League designs
His appointment is part of a broader strategy to build a recruitment operation that can tap into a global network of scouts, a move that aligns with Wrexham’s ambition to compete at the highest level and to generate revenue through strategic player sales as the Championship adopts a new financial framework.
The club has also lodged plans for a state‑of‑the‑art first‑team building that will house the director of football’s office, signalling a long‑term investment in infrastructure.

Wrexham’s recent transfer window has seen the club linked with several overseas prospects, including Liberato Cacace, Sidiki Cherif and Matias Moreno, indicating a willingness to look beyond domestic markets.
