A Strategic Appointment
Steve Piotrowski, a veteran ice hockey official, has been named the NCAA secretary‑rules editor for both men’s and women’s hockey, taking effect on September 1. He replaces Jeff Fulton in the role, bringing a long track record of officiating and administration to the position.
Piotrowski’s career spans more than four decades of collegiate hockey, during which he has officiated over 1,300 Division I games and served in various leadership capacities. His most recent role was director of officials for the Central Collegiate Hockey Association from 2007 to 2012, and he has coordinated men’s hockey officials for the Big Ten Conference since 2012.
The new appointment underscores the NCAA’s intent to strengthen rule clarity and integrity across the sport. In his capacity, Piotrowski will focus on education, communication and collaboration among officials, coaches and administrators to ensure that the rules are understood and applied consistently at every level of college hockey.
Beyond his domestic responsibilities, Piotrowski has represented the sport internationally, officiating at world championship events and junior tournaments selected by the International Ice Hockey Federation. He also brings experience from 14 NCAA tournaments, including six national title games, to his new duties.
Piotrowski said the role offers a chance to contribute to the sport’s integrity by refining rule interpretation and fostering a collaborative environment. He hopes his background will help shape policies that enhance the competitive experience for student‑athletes while maintaining the highest standards of officiating.
