Steve Robinson, a veteran basketball coach with a career that spans more than three decades, has joined Elon University’s basketball staff as a special assistant to head coach Billy Taylor. The appointment was confirmed this week and marks the latest chapter in a résumé that blends deep coaching experience with a proven ability to develop NBA talent.
A Legacy of Champions
Robinson spent 18 seasons on the staff at the University of North Carolina under Hall of Fame coach Roy Williams, contributing to three national championships during his tenure. After his time in Chapel Hill, he moved to the University of Arizona, where he served as an assistant for the 2024‑25 season before returning to the Carolinas to be closer to family and the Elon campus.
During the past season, Robinson was a regular presence at Elon’s games and practices at the Schar Center, observing the team’s dynamics and offering input during drills. His familiarity with the region stems from his recent Arizona role, but his roots in North Carolina run deep, having built lasting relationships with players, alumni, and media across the state.
Perhaps the most striking element of Robinson’s profile is his work with NBA prospects. Over the course of his career he has coached or recruited more than 60 players who have gone on to professional careers, a testament to his eye for talent and player development. This expertise is expected to complement Elon’s recruiting efforts and help shape the next generation of Phoenix standouts.
In his new role, Robinson will take on many of the responsibilities that were previously handled by Al Seibert, including scouting, player development, and day‑to‑day operations on the court. Billy Taylor expressed confidence that Robinson’s championship pedigree and extensive network will elevate the program’s competitiveness as the team looks to build on recent successes.
