The End of an Era
Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian announced the dismissal of linebacker Ty’Anthony Smith on Tuesday, citing conduct detrimental to the program. The move comes as the Longhorns reshape their defense ahead of the 2026 campaign.
Smith, a two‑year veteran who appeared in 28 games with a single start, leaves after a season in which he logged 59 tackles, several sacks, interceptions and forced fumbles. A lingering shoulder injury limited his snap count and sparked questions about his long‑term fit.
The decision was influenced by a strained relationship with defensive coordinator Will Muschamp, whose scheme Smith struggled to adapt to after the injury forced him into a reduced role.
With two years of eligibility remaining, Smith was expected to test the transfer portal, a path that many analysts believed would lead him to a program where he could start immediately.
Texas will look to fill the void with transfers Rasheem Biles, who arrives from Pitt, and Justin Cryer, a former Florida State starter. Both bring extensive starting experience, having combined for dozens of career starts at the collegiate level.
Younger prospects such as Kosi Okpala, Tyler Atkinson and Rocky Cummings are also expected to compete for playing time, adding depth to a unit that will blend fresh talent with seasoned veterans.
Sarkisian emphasized the importance of recruiting high‑caliber athletes while accelerating the development of emerging players, noting that the program must balance immediate competitiveness with long‑term growth.
