Steve Schweer has been named the new head coach of the University of Wisconsin‑Oshkosh men’s basketball program, succeeding Matt Lewis. The announcement comes as the Owls look to build on a legacy that includes multiple conference championships and a national title in 2019.
Schweer arrives after an eight‑year tenure at Illinois College, where he guided the team to its most successful stretch in program history. Under his leadership the Blue Boys captured two Midwest Conference regular‑season championships and posted NCAA tournament victories in each of the last two seasons.
His achievements earned him the 2023 Midwest Conference Coach of the Year award and a seat on the NCAA Men’s Basketball National Rules Committee, underscoring his influence beyond the court.
Schweer’s coaching journey includes stints at North Central College, Monmouth College and North Park University, where he refined his approach to player development and team strategy.
A Proven Record of Excellence
A former player at Illinois Wesleyan University, Schweer earned his bachelor’s degree there in 2006 and later completed a master’s at North Park University in 2011. He now brings a blend of playing experience, academic insight and coaching acumen to Oshkosh.
The Owls program, steeped in tradition, has claimed 15 WIAC regular‑season crowns, five tournament titles and a national championship in 2019. Administrators believe Schweer’s proven record and strategic vision will help sustain and elevate that success in the coming years.
