Steven Baker has been appointed as the new boys basketball coach at Green Bay Preble, taking over from Rick Rosinski, who was ousted after three seasons. The school announced the change late in the offseason, notifying parents and players of the transition as the program looks to build on recent progress.
A Coach With a Vision
Baker arrives with a résumé that blends local roots and international experience. A 2012 graduate of the University of Wisconsin‑Green Bay, he starred for the Phoenix before embarking on a professional career abroad, most recently in Portugal where he averaged 15.5 points over 24 games. His collegiate numbers — 7.3 points and a 42.9 percent three‑point clip as a senior — still resonate among longtime fans.
Beyond his playing days, Baker has spent years shaping talent through his Next Level Grind AAU program, a venture that has become a fixture in northeastern Wisconsin’s basketball circuit. The relationships he forged there gave him a front‑row view of many of the Preble players before they ever stepped onto the high school court.
In his first press conference, Baker hinted at a hybrid approach that blends an up‑tempo pace with the disciplined, half‑court principles reminiscent of Dick Bennett. ‘I want to mix aggressiveness with a little bit of that classic Wisconsin style,’ he said, emphasizing that trust and communication will be the foundation of his system.
The team he inherits showed steady improvement under Rosinski the past two seasons, and Baker is confident that his blend of familiarity and fresh perspective can push the program to new heights. His ultimate goal is simple: cultivate relationships, instill belief, and help the players trust the process.
