A New Chapter for the Iowa Wild
The American Hockey League franchise announced this week that Stu Bickel will assume the role of head coach, succeeding the previous bench boss after a period of transition. The move comes as the Wild look to build on recent competitive showings and develop the next generation of talent for the Minnesota Wild organization.
Bickel, a Minnesota native, spent a decade navigating the professional ranks, logging 310 games in the AHL and 76 in the NHL. His playing career included stints with the Iowa Chops and the Wild itself, giving him an intimate understanding of the organization’s culture and expectations.
Over the past five seasons he served as an assistant coach with the Springfield Thunderbirds and the Coachella Valley Firebirds, guiding both clubs to three straight Calder Cup Finals. Under his guidance the Firebirds captured back‑to‑back championships, showcasing his ability to manage high‑pressure situations and maximize player performance.
Before his coaching tenure, Bickel contributed to the New York Rangers’ 2012 Stanley Cup Playoff run, appearing in 18 games. He also honed his leadership skills at the University of Minnesota, where he began his coaching journey as an assistant before later steering the Minnesota Magicians as both head coach and assistant general manager in the North American Hockey League.
Bickel’s blend of on‑ice experience, developmental insight, and proven playoff pedigree positions him as a natural fit to lead the Iowa Wild. Fans and analysts alike anticipate that his appointment will inject fresh energy into the team’s prospects pipeline, aligning closely with the Minnesota Wild’s long‑term vision.
