Stu Holt, a veteran special teams coordinator with more than two decades of collegiate experience, has been rehired by the Louisville Cardinals to address persistent issues in the kicking game ahead of the 2026 fall season.
Holt first joined the Cardinals in 2019 under head coach Scott Satterfield, serving as special teams coach and tight ends coach during a three‑year stint that included a 27.4‑yard average on kickoff returns, a figure that placed the unit fifth nationally.
After a productive period at Virginia Tech from 2022 to 2025, where he mentored six All‑ACC performers — including kicker John Love and return specialists Jaylin Lane and Tucker Holloway — Holt’s reputation as a developer of special‑teams talent grew.
His work at South Florida earned him a finalist nod for the Broyles Award, recognizing his contributions to punt‑return efficiency, and he helped James Turner secure All‑ACC honorable‑mention honors by converting 86.7 percent of his field goals in 2020.
Holt’s playing background adds a unique dimension; he once snapped the ball for Mack Brown’s North Carolina teams from 1992 to 1995, giving him a rare perspective that he now brings to practice drills and game planning.
The Cardinals will test the revamped unit in Nashville, Tennessee, where they open the season against Ole Miss in a game that could define the trajectory of the special‑teams overhaul.
Coach Jeff Brohm, who has been vocal about the need for improvement, expressed confidence that Holt’s return will bring the consistency and precision the staff has been seeking.
With the roster set to feature new talent and a refreshed approach, Louisville hopes the adjustments will translate into better field position and scoring opportunities as the season unfolds.
