A recent study of retired British professional soccer players has sparked discussion about the long‑term health effects of repeated head impacts in the sport.
The research, unveiled at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference, contrasted 142 former players, all between 30 and 60 years old, with a control group of 56 individuals who had never engaged in contact sports.
Brain imaging revealed modest reductions in grey‑matter volume in regions tied to memory and emotional regulation among the ex‑players, though only a small fraction displayed severe atrophy.
Cognitive testing, after accounting for age and education, showed no meaningful differences between the two groups, and the investigators observed no evidence of the memory loss that typically precedes dementia.
Mental‑health questionnaires indicated that 31 % of the retired athletes met criteria for clinical depression, compared with 9 % of controls, and 42 % reported anxiety, versus 25 % of the comparison group.
The authors stressed that the findings do not establish a direct causal link to Alzheimer’s disease, but they plan to continue longitudinal monitoring to better understand how cumulative head impacts may influence dementia risk.
