Structural brain differences emerge in retired players
The investigation, led by Thomas Parker, examined 142 former professional soccer players aged 30 to 60 and contrasted them with a control group of 56 healthy individuals of similar age and background.
Using magnetic resonance imaging and a battery of cognitive assessments, researchers measured brain volume and evaluated emotional health, finding that former athletes displayed measurable reductions in tissue within regions responsible for memory and emotional regulation.
Despite these anatomical variations, only two percent of the retired cohort showed signs of severe brain shrinkage, and standardized cognitive tests did not reveal any decline in overall mental performance.
Participants also reported elevated levels of anxiety and depression, suggesting that the impact of repeated head contacts may affect mood pathways even when thinking abilities remain intact.
The authors emphasized that the findings do not establish a direct causal link to Alzheimer's disease, but they do highlight a need for continued surveillance of former players to monitor any emerging neurological changes over time.
To that end, the team plans to reassess the same group every two years, gathering longitudinal data that could clarify how repetitive impacts influence long‑term brain health.
The study mirrors earlier work on retired rugby players and adds a new dimension to the conversation about contact sports, brain integrity, and the importance of proactive health monitoring.
