The Sturgeon Bay Clippers are entering a pivotal season as Jesus Mejia Jr. steps into the role of head coach, succeeding Todd Maas after his 20‑year tenure that helped shape the program’s modern identity.
Mejia, who previously served as an assistant and youth development coordinator, brings a playing background to the sideline and has already outlined a philosophy centered on teamwork, ball‑sharing, and incremental growth.
Building chemistry on and off the field
The new coaching staff has emphasized bonding experiences, including overnight trips, to forge chemistry among a squad that blends senior leadership with emerging talent.
Returning seniors such as Joni Ismaili, Finn Stevenson, Daniel Wienke, Kemal Wienke and Cedar Tomberlin will be joined by juniors Jaxzen Bleck and veteran goalkeeper Ross Spritka, providing a balanced mix of experience and vigor.
The departure of last season’s standout midfielder Will Estes, the Player of the Year, and defensive anchor Jaylen Reynolds leaves significant gaps, but the remaining roster is expected to step up in key moments.
Other notable members of the squad include Zone Wienke and Simon Downey, who add depth to the midfield and defensive lines as the team looks to maintain competitiveness.
A demanding schedule and lofty goals
The Clippers will test themselves against Division 1 and 2 opponents, including Green Bay Preble, Kenosha Tremper, West De Pere, Cedarburg and perennial powerhouse The Prairie School.
The season opener is slated for August 27 against intra‑county rivals Gibraltar/Sevastopol, a match that will set the tone for the weeks ahead.
While the schedule presents formidable challenges, Mejia’s approach remains pragmatic: focus on daily improvement, prepare thoroughly for each away game, and keep the ultimate goal — returning to the WIAA Division 4 state tournament in Milwaukee — within reach.
Fans and alumni alike are hopeful that under Mejia’s guidance the Clippers can recapture the momentum that once propelled them to the state stage and restore the program’s proud tradition.
