The Sugar Bowl LHSAA Boys’ Basketball State Championships are set to make a high‑profile return to the Cajundome in Lafayette, ending a twelve‑year stretch that kept the tournament in Lake Charles. The arena, which last hosted the event from 1997 through 2011, is celebrated for its storied past and the passionate support of the local community.
The Cajundome’s comeback
A recent renovation has transformed the Cajundome into what officials describe as the premier basketball facility in the state. Upgraded seating, modernized lighting and improved acoustics give the venue a fresh edge that aligns with the championship’s growing stature.
In 1999 the tournament set a six‑day attendance record of nearly 70,000 fans, a benchmark that still resonates with organizers. The anticipated crowds this year are expected to surpass that mark, driven by the venue’s expanded capacity and the convenience of Lafayette’s location at the intersection of I‑10 and I‑49.
Ben Berthelot, president of the Lafayette Convention and Visitors Commission, says the return will translate into stronger ticket sales and a noticeable lift in regional revenue. “The combination of a renovated arena and easy access for schools across Louisiana makes this the ideal setting for the championships,” he noted.
The University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s backing has been pivotal, providing both logistical support and a recruiting showcase for prospective student‑athletes. The partnership underscores the event’s role as a catalyst for athletic talent development in the region.
Beyond the games, the championships reinforce Lafayette’s reputation as a hub for sports tourism, blending historic tradition with contemporary infrastructure to benefit fans, schools and the local economy alike.
